Senior Boys Capture Provincial “A” Basketball Crown (2014)

Congratulations to our SR. Boys Basketball Team who brought home the  2014 Provincial “A” banner this past weekend (March 20-22). The boys defeated a very talented team from Lawn by a score of 103-97 in what was a fantastic  championship game played by both teams. The team consisting of only seven players (none older than grade 10) got important contributions from each and every player throughout the tournament.  More detailed information on the tournament can be found below. Way to go boys!

Game 1:  Holy Name of Mary (HOST) 84- SMA 72

In the opening game of the tournament  Stella Maris squared off with the host team from Lawn. Our boys got off to a shaky start falling behind by 10 early on in the first quarter.  As the game progressed however, the Mystic settled in and found a level of comfort on the floor which they would not lose for the remainder of the weekend. In what proved to be a preview of the championship game, both teams exhibited great skill and produced an exciting game as the teams traded baskets.  In the end, the host squad came out on top. Devon Curtis led the way offensively for the Mystic with 30 points.

Game 2: SMA 68- Valmont Academy 59

In game two of the tournament the Mystic boys took on the Vikings from Valmont Academy. Our boys came out from the opening tip-off focused to even their record at 1-1. Right from the opening minutes the Mystic were on fire making shot after shot and were able to build a 25-12 lead after quarter one. The Vikings however, did not quit and managed to chip away at the lead throughout the game. The Mystics lead was cut to 6 midway through the 4th quarter. To the credit of our boys they managed to make some key shots down the stretch and came away with a 9 point victory. Nick Luther poured in 36 points for the winners.

Game 3 (Quarter-final): SMA 72- St. Josephs All Grade (Lamaline) 52

It was the Mystic and the Timber-Wolves who would square off in the tournaments first quarter-final. The Mystic boys came out focused and used an effective full court press throughout the game which proved to be the difference. The Mystic managed to build a comfortable lead in the second half and were able to cruise into the Semi-final. Curtis, Luther, and Denis Power all scored in double digits to lead the winners.

Game 4 (Semi-Final) SMA 68 – St. Marys All Grade (Labrador)63

In the semi-final our boys matched up the previously unbeaten Wolves from the Labrador representative. In what was a very hard fought back and forth game both teams left everything they had on the floor in an attempt to reach the Championship game. Due in large part to a red hot third quarter in which The Mystic managed to bulid a 15 point lead, the boys from Stella Maris were able to book their ticket to the championship. Nick Luther continued his fantastic tournament pouring in 32 points.

Game 5 (Championship): SMA 103- Holy Name of Mary 97

The Championship game proved to be the highlight of the tournament. The Mystic and Mustangs from Lawn squared off once again but this time with Provincial title at stake. Both teams did not disappoint the fans in attendance and those watching online as they traded baskets throughout the game and battled right down to the final buzzer. Both teams once again exhibited tremendous skill, teamwork, hard work and sportsmanship. In the end the Mystic proved to be too much for the Mustangs and their many fans who came out to support the tournament. When the final horn sounded The Mystic had a 6 point victory and the title of Provincial  Champions.  Denis Power had a standout game for the winners scoring 38 points and grabbing 26 rebounds.  Due to foul trouble each and every player had to play important minutes during the championship and it’s safe to say the Mystic boys were the true definition of a team. Congratulations Boys!
